When you were a little diva in elementary school, you probably changed career ambitions every week. I can remember watching Living Single  and wanting to be a lawyer like Maxine and the creative force behind a magazine like Khadijah.  Kyle’s job as a stockbroker even fascinated me until I remembered I sucked at math! Now that you’re an adult, you may be looking to shift gears and embark upon a new career. Some people will try to talk you out of it because it’s “not practical”, but opinions are a dime a dozen. If it’s truly in your spirit to be something, then you should take action.

Grind Pretty had the pleasure of speaking with Houston-based life and business strategist Miara Shaw who helps women move from stuck to execution. Here are Miara’s top 5 tips for diving into a new career!

1. Find a leader in the industry you want to be like and study what they do very closely.  Buy their books, follow their blogs, get their email list and soak up as much information as you can.  Miara stresses that one should always be a student; not a copycat.

2. Get an adviser, coach or mentor to help you develop your business plan and financial outlook. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel.  Connect with someone that can help you avoid some of the barriers and challenges of getting into the industry you desire to be in.   Some of the best people will require an investment as they are otherwise too busy to give you detailed advice unless you already know them well.
3. Continue to be present in your current job and save your money while you have a full time paycheck in your current position.  Also pay for as much brand development work as possible before leaving your current position.
4.  Don’t be so hard on your self.  Don’t get caught up watching other people’s highlight reels on social media and feel that you are too far behind or need to do something because others are doing it. Find your lane and stay in it.
5.  Know that the journey won’t be flawless and that perfection is not attainable.  Focus on delivering your very best, keep encouraged and give the world what you were created to do.
